2025 Volvo Changes at a Glance
- The all-electric Volvo EX30 and Volvo EX90 SUVs are now available to drivers in Lexington, KY, and beyond.
- The top-tier trim for most Volvo automobiles is now called "Ultra"; previously, the highest trim levels were called "Ultimate."
- The Volvo EX40 is the new name for what was previously called the Volvo XC40 Recharge.
- Plug-in hybrid models, previously given the "Recharge" name, are now referred to as PHEV or Plug-In Hybrid. For example, the Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid is a three-row luxury SUV with stunning amenities and the ability to drive short distances on solely electric power.
- The brand continues to win safety awards, such as the 2025 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award for the Volvo XC90.1
Key Changes to the 2025 Volvo SUV Models
For fans of all-electric SUVs, you'll be excited to know that the Volvo EV lineup has been dramatically elevated. The Volvo EX30 and Volvo EX90 have joined the stable of 2025 Volvo models. The former is a subcompact luxury SUV, and the latter a three-row luxury vehicle. Additionally, plug-in hybrid Volvo cars have received new names for 2025.
Some of the Volvo 2025 changes involve the Volvo EX40. Previously known as the Volvo XC40 Recharge, the car's name has been changed to bring it in line with the streamlined Volvo Cars naming conventions. The Volvo EX40 still offers two powertrains for 2025: the Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor. Their specs are as follows:
- Single Motor Extended Range: 248 horsepower, a 6.9-second 0-60 mph time, and 296 miles of all-electric range.2
- Twin Motor: 402 horsepower, a 4.6-second 0-60 mph time, and 260 miles of all-electric driving range.2
There have also been name-related changes for plug-in and mild-hybrid Volvo 2025 models. The former have lost the "Recharge" label; they are now known by their powertrain. The Volvo XC60 Recharge has become the Volvo XC60 Plug-In Hybrid, for example. These vehicles have lost none of their power with this shifted nomenclature – they still produce 455 horsepower and more than 500 pound-feet of torque.
The next name change affects both mild- and plug-in hybrid vehicles in our all-new Volvo inventory. The top-tier trim for almost every Volvo car is now called "Ultra," whereas it used to be known as the "Ultimate."

Key Changes to Volvo Models: 2025 Updates
Refinement and steady advancements are a hallmark of all Volvo cars. The company's sedans, like the 2025 Volvo S60, have also received updates. Its top-tier trim is called the Ultra now, and it's available with a Black Edition package that adds an aura of refinement to an already impressive vehicle.
As for the plug-in hybrid sedan variants, the Volvo S60 Plug-In Hybrid and Volvo S90 PHEV have new names, just like the Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid. While these cars are no longer using the "Recharge" label, they're still eligible for our competitive Volvo financing options.
